You know a hacking story is big when the BBC leads with it on its news bulletins. That’s what happened on Saturday 8 August when Carphone Warehouse said hackers had accessed the details of 2.4 million customers. Ouch. We know a huge hack when we see it - and so did Huw Edwards.

A very affordable 23in monitor

The standard monitor size these days is 24 inches, that being the diagonal measurement from the pixel at the bottom left to the one at the top right. If we quoted the dimensions the same way as any other object, we’d call it 531x299mm. You can get bigger, of course, but when you think that in 1984 the Apple Macintosh started the personal computer revolution with a screen that was only nine inches across, two feet should be enough for anyone.

31 Command as administrator


We’ll kick off this section with an important tip: most hard drive-related commands will only work if you run the Command Prompt as administrator.

If you’re not running as administrator, and you attempt a command such as ‘chkdsk’ (see below), Windows will chuck an inscrutable chunk of jargon at you: “Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode”.
