The evolution of iPhone and iOS

An exciting past, present and future

THE DEVICE THAT TRANSFORMED PERSONAL COMMUNICATION - AND WHAT’S NEXT

Where were you when the late Steve Jobs stepped onto the stage of the Moscone Center in San Francisco in January 2007 to debut the very first iPhone, one of the true consumer technology game-changers of recent times? Wherever you were and whatever you were doing, chances are that the mobile device you then had in your pocket was nothing like the genre-transforming smartphone that was already etching its place in history - a history that has continued to be made since then.

Most of this Labs test has been dedicated to 4K screens with the same 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio as 1080p displays, but there’s an alternative option, in the form of 21:9 ultra-wide curved displays, such as the 34-inch Philips BDM3490UC. With a resolution of 3,440 x 1,440, the overall pixel count is much lower than that of a 4K panel. It’s precisely 880 pixels wider than a 2,560 x 1,440 screen, with 440 pixels added to each side. The Philips is also curved at the edges, bringing the sides slightly more in line with your peripheral vision.

Dell’s 27in Dell UP2715K offers a compelling alternative to the 4K displays on test this month, with a higher resolution and even smaller pixels. The standard 4K resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 is exactly four times 1,920 x 1,080, and if you similarly multiply 2,560 x 1,440, you end up with the Dell’s 5,120 x 2,880, or 5K, resolution.

There’s a small problem though. Driving this number of pixels at 60Hz requires more bandwidth than a single DisplayPort 1.2 cable can handle, so you need to connect two cables to the UP2715K from your graphics card. The DisplayPort 1.3 standard will overcome this limitation, but no graphics card supports it yet. You can also use the Dell UP2715K as a 4K display with a single cable connected to the mini-DisplayPort input.
