Sesame 2 Wireless Proximity Lock

Sesame 2 Wireless Proximity Lock

Add another layer of security to your Mac with this miniscule proximity lock

There’s a multitude of choice when it comes to selecting how you want to protect your Mac from potential harm while you’re using it, but the choices are dramatically reduced when you’re away from your device. All it takes is for someone to figure out your login password and they’ll have instant access to whatever is stored on your desktop. To combat the lack of choice, Sesame has recently launched a proximity lock to help keep the contents of your Mac safe and secure while away from it.

The unit itself is tiny and is designed to be attached to your person in some way. Although it’s also light, its size means you’ll have to be extra vigilant to make sure you don’t accidentally lose it. Having a plastic build keeps the cost down and although it does leave some noticeable flex in the shell of the unit, the main worry is that it will break against any significant impact. Around the back is a removable back plate that houses a single battery and there’s a small LED light to the right.

Setting up requires you to download the associated software on to your Mac, but the process takes no more than five minutes to complete and is simple to follow. At the end you’ll need to select how you want the wireless lock to unlock your Mac. Users can choose from an automatic unlock option that gives them instant access to their Mac, or to add a password system on top of this. The varying levels of security options are certainly impressive, and it can’t be bad to make sure your Mac is suitably protected.

We tested the Sesame 2 over a variety of distances and every single time it correctly locked our Mac and asked for our required credentials when we returned. Having a single battery does mean that you’ll need to add replacements fairly regularly, but the unit goes into sleep mode when not in use.

Security is an issue that every Apple user simply cannot ignore and the Sesame 2 is a highly usable device that works without any faults. The sensor correctly recognises when to lock and unlock your Mac, and the varying controls you can tinker with is impressive. We’d love to see a more weighty variation released soon, so we wouldn’t be living in fear of losing the lock, but that’s only a small issue in what is otherwise a superb product.
